This is a very interesting question. For me, personally, the answer is NO. And it is not because of the fact that Mortal Kombat 1 is not worth $60 per year with the additions of new characters and new stories, it is because this is a net inferior game to Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate (basically complete game with all fighters), which from time to time thanks to Steam sales you can even buy for $10.
MK1 Khaos Reigns Bundle
During year two of MK1 we can get this upgrade for around $60 that includes:
- Khaos Reigns Story Expansion
- Noob Saibot
- Cyrax
- Sektor
- Ghostface
- T-1000
- Conan the Barbarian
Mortal Kombat 1 with the extra Kombat Pack 1 (which includes extra fighters) is around $100. This was practically the price of the game for the first year and you have to pay it anyway if you want to play the game. Then, just like with World of Warcraft, you have to add like $60 per year.
Now, the problem with this is that the story expansion will most likely not be that interested. And the replay-ability advertised at launch for the game is just a series of 1 v 1 fights that you quickly, quickly do not care much about.
Problems
A big problem with Mortal Kombat 1 is that it lacks the will to replay it. Sure, it is a fighting game and you can play it with friends, but it is just not as fun as the other ones in the past. The Tag system is just not hitting where it should.
The second problem is that the game will quickly become very very expensive to own for someone who did not buy it from the start. How do you now convince a new player to drop $160 on a game? You simply cannot.
While the story mode is definitely superior, you only play that once. Then, you just wait for the next game in the series.
And the game does have surprisingly high system requirements, combined with already occupying around 135 GB of space.
But, what many complain about is the addition of a DLC for $60, which is definitely a lot more than industry averages.
$60 For A DLC?
The DLC will include the T-1000 (Terminator series), Conan the Barbarian, and Ghostface (Scream Series). So there are some royalties that need to be paid. Is that worth it though? It looks like Mortal Kombat is nowadays focused so much on these guest appearances that it is just not fun to play anymore. I am one of those who love the Mortal Kombat universe. The extra characters are just fun. But the universe did suffer a lot with MK1.
And $60 for a DLC is, I personally believe, way too much.
