Big news today with the “huge” hit game Helldivers 2 hitting an all-time low number of PC players in the early part of July, going under 13,000 concurrent players on Steam. While this is still a lot when compared to the majority of online games out there, it is still a very low number that basically marks a drop of 90%.
Helldivers 2 sold 12 million copies. Well, more than that since these were the stats at the end of March. And the top number of players during a day is around 35,000. It is still quite a lot but so far away from the game’s numbers when it was first released.
Basically, this is a game that has been losing concurrent players constantly since March. During May it lost over half of its player count and in June around 25% of what remained among PC players.
Now, the truth is that this is a game that was not free when it launched. It was around $40 so this does mean a lot of money was made by Arrowhead. We should be seeing some constant updates for Helldivers 2 but will the game actually make it and be popular again?
Most likely not!
I did not buy Helldivers 2. I only watched people play it. No matter how we look at things, this game has a huge problem: it becomes boring and grindy. You just keep grinding and shooting hordes of monsters. It is impossible for such a game to be popular until something serious happens.
Also, the way in which Sony handled the game, trying to force gamers to link to a PS account, was horrible. Players were lost there forever. And out of those who remain, it is clear that this is the type of game that becomes boring in the long run.
From my point of view, Helldivers 2 is a great example of a game that should have been single player, not multiplayer. It will have a player base, it will make some money, then it will die. Completely.
Helldivers 2 is not that great of a base that people thought it was. It was visible from the start. Such a game simply cannot work well in the current gaming landscape.
