SteelSeries Apex Pro TKL (2023) Keyboard – Quick Review

SteelSeries Apex Pro TKL (2023) is the type of wired keyboard that you most likely want to use. For gaming purposes, it is very good, just like the previous Apex Pro models. The OmniPoint switches are still in place and there are several extra features included, some coming from the 2019 Apex Pro TKL.

Long Story Short

The SteelSeries Apex Pro TKL (2023 Edition) wired gaming keyboard is very good. Latency is very low and you will love the OmniPoint switches since they help fine-tune keypress sensitivity. This is perfect for adjusting to the type of games you usually play. The included wrist rest is just the cherry on top.

Main Pros:

  • Low latency is remarkably low.
  • The build quality is impressive.
  • Adjustable actuation points for switches.

  • Zero tactile switch options.
  • Keys are slightly wobbly.

As you can see, it is hard to find some cons.

This gaming keyboard is TenKeyLess with a height of 1.7’’ and a width of 13.9’’. When you include the wrist rest, the depth is 8.3’’. Without it, the depth is 5.1’’. And the weight is just 1.62 lbs.

As you can easily see, the keyboard is compact. It will not occupy much of the desk space, especially when looking at full-size keyboards. While it is not as compact as the smaller Apex Pro Mini Wireless, it is still very compact.

The build quality of the SteelSeries Apex Pro TKL (2023) wired gaming keyboard can only be described as being impressive. Its chassis is plastic and not much flexibility is present. The top place is aluminum, making it feel and look of a high quality. PBT plastic is the material chosen for keycaps. You will love touching them and the textured finish adds some extra grip.

Keys do have wobbling but it is not at all noticeable.

The gaming keyboard does not have a curved design, it is not split and alignment for keys is staggered. It features a minimum incline of 4 degrees and a maximum one of 11 degrees. The home row height is 1.3’’.

Because of this combo, the keyboard has some great ergonomics. Two incline angles are available, you get an included wrist rest (something not expected for this type of keyboard), and the magnetic attachment will make it very easy to use. Overall, you get really good support.

You can easily replace the cherry stabilizers and the stabilizer fixation is plate-mounted. You cannot hot-swap the switches and the switch stem shape is the popular Cherry MX Style, with a north-facing cherry MX interference. While not many customization options are available, they are more than ok for most users.

You do have backlighting, RGB, and per-key backlighting, with several effects available. Everything is easily controllable through software. Keycaps include shine-through legends so it is very easy to read when used in darker rooms. But, there is a problem since color mixing is quite poor. Also, white lighting does show a blue tint.

Just as the name implies, the wired keyboard is wired. It is detachable and the cable length is 7.4 ft, with a USB type-C connector. It does not feature Bluetooth or batteries. Basically, you have the standard wired-only keyboard. However, you can also get the SteelSeries Apex Pro TKL Wireless option if you want wireless connectivity.

Configuring the SteelSeries Apex Pro TKL (2023) wired gaming keyboard is done through SteelSeries GG, proprietary software. It is compatible with macOS and Windows. 6 plus profiles are available.

It should be said that the software is very easy to use and features several adjustable options. Keys can be rebound, you have macros you can program, and pre-travel distance can be set for every single switch. Obviously, you can also control RGB lighting.

Actual switch actuation point can be set and macros can be directly recorded on the keyboard. Just remember that onboard memory cannot save some of the custom RGB settings, like other settings. And you would need the software running in the operating system background for the settings to actually run.

Extra Features Of Interest

The SteelSeries Apex Pro TKL (2023) gaming keyboard has some interesting extra features available. Many of them are standard and what you would expect on a gaming keyboard giving the price tag. This includes onboard profile storage, anti-ghosting, and hotkeys for media control.

While there are 0 dedicated keys for macro, there is onboard macro programming available with the use of the software mentioned before. There is an extra scroll wheel and you do have windows key lock so you do not have to worry about mistakes while playing.

A unique feature you will see on this gaming keyboard is that you can adjust actuation points. Also, it is possible to program some dual bindings. They would activate at different actuation points. Actuation points cannot be adjusted on arrow keys, navigation keys, and function keys.

The last thing of interest is that there is a nice OLED screen present on the right size. Use this to customize some options straight from the keyboard. You would no longer need to use software.
